6/15/11-6/27/11 Rock Creek to Castleton on the Hudson

We returned to our boat on June 14/11 and called a marina to haul it. I had checked the cutlass bearing before we left and it had failed. WE HAULED ON THUR REPLACED THE BEARING AND THE SHAFT AS WELL. So there went another boat unit, to quote Dean Perry. We went to Tony and Lisa's dock and planned to leave on Mon 6/20 after visiting with Mom , Susie,Frank, Richard and Nancy.
We left from Rock Cr., headed north on the Chesapeake, through the C&D canal to Reedy Island on the Delaware River(60 NM) to spend the evening. 6/21 (longest day) we left Reedy at 0500 on an outgoing tide and rode it most of the way to Cape May Canal. We went through the canal and into the Atlantic, headed for Atlantic City NJ and arrived before dark(83NM). Our plan to leave early was dashed by the idiot light on the alternator coming on and we dug in our spares and replaced it. we still made it out of AC by 0800 and pushed on to Sandy Hook and the town of Atlantic Highlands NJ. The Admiral declared Thursday a day of rest. She was right of course and upon waking Thur. we were surrounded by fog. It stayed all day and Friday as well. We were both ready to leave on Sat. and hauled anchor about 0900 to catch the tide and current through NYC harbor.
We motor sailed up the Hudson R. to Haverstraw Bay(51NM) and settled in for the evening. It was so nice that we contemplated staying another, but left early again in a rainy drizzle. Sunday evening found us in Esopus Cr.(58NM) with a good stop for Skipper. Monday 6/27 we made Castleton on the Hudson (34 NM) early afternoon. We checked in and found our lumber for bracing the mast upon unstepping. We were able to get the mast in its cradle and Bimini and Dodger back up before my cousin Pat and husband David arrived at 4:30 Pm. We had a very enjoyable evening with them on board and said goodbye after dark thirty.

  1. The bottom of that keel looks pretty clean and free of bottom paint - as if it has been pushing through some Bahamian sand ;-)
